With
the publication of the 10th edition of The Making,
Shaping and Treating of Steel in 1985, the Association of Iron
and Steel Engineers assumed total responsibility for the future
of this prestigious document from the U.S. Steel Corporation. In
1998, the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers transferred all
rights to The Making, Shaping and Treating of Steel to The
AISE Steel Foundation. Readers of the 11th edition
will obviously note the most dramatic change in technology and style
of presentation since the book’s inception in 1919.
In
1995, The AISE Steel Foundation formed the MSTS Steering
Committee to oversee the creation of the 11th edition,
and this committee looked out at a vastly different steel industry
than that of the 10th edition. Hence, a new publication
concept was deemed necessary, and this concept had to be consistent
with the massive changes in steel industry economics that had occurred
during the 1980s and early 1990s. These changes were occasioned
by restructuring, downsizing, and wholesale implementation of new
and improved technology. In turn, these changes produced major increases
in labor productivity, huge reductions in energy consumption, and
vastly improved yields. Concomitant with these improvements, the
steel marketplace saw the introduction of a host of new and improved
products.
Given
the backdrop of the industry’s transformation, the Steering Committee
deemed a revision to the 10th edition in its current
format to be impractical, and therefore decided the 11th
edition would be a series of separate volumes dealing with specific
subjects.
The
separate volume concept was implemented by selecting Volume Chairpersons
who were recognized as world leaders in their respective fields
of technology. These leaders, in turn, recruited a team of top-notch
authors to create the individual chapters. These expert authors
came from individual steel companies, the steel industry supplier
base, and several universities with close association with the steel
industry. Thus, for the first time, the MSTS represents a broad
and diverse view of steel technology as seen from various vantage
points within industry and academe.
Despite
all the changes to be found in the 11th edition, the
MSTS Steering Committee has held on to certain traditions. One such
tradition has been to provide to a wide audience (or readership)
within the steel industry a basic reference containing the current
practices and latest technology used in the making, shaping, and
treating of steel. The primary readership targets are university
students (technical knowledge), steel producers (training and technology
implementation), and customers and suppliers (technical orientation
and reference). As noted by the author of the 1st edition in 1919,
“the book was written for…(those)…who are seeking self-instruction.”
The 11th edition attempts to maintain that tradition
by incorporating technical information at several different levels
of complexity and detail, thereby offering information of value
to a wide-ranging readership.

Steelmaking and Refining Volume (Now
available.) - Table of Contents
The steel industry has significantly increased productivity and
quality in the decade since the publication of the 10th edition
of The Making, Shaping and Treating of Steel. This advancement has
resulted from a number of factors, including improved processes
and increased understanding of fundamentals.
This
volume, (the first of five in a series) focusing entirely on steelmaking
and refining processes, emphasizes the important developments that
contributed to these improvements and certainly will lead to further
improvements. In particular, the chapters on EAF steelmaking and
ladle and secondary refining have been greatly expanded. The chapters
on BOF and AOD steelmaking have been updated and expanded, and the
chapter on fundamentals has been updated to reflect current understanding.
The
Steelmaking and Refining Volume of the 11th edition now has over
twice the material on steelmaking and refining processes as compared
to the previous edition.

Casting
Volume (In
Writing) - Table of Contents
This
volume will focus on all issues related to the operation of a continuous
caster. Emphasis will be placed upon the fundamental issues that
allow proper machine design and operation. This volume will be the
first comprehensive treatment of ingot and continuous casting in
The Making, Shaping and Treating of Steel and will cover
all aspects of billet, bloom, thin and thick slab casting. Significant
attention will be paid to: the caster operational practices which
can lead to defect formation; the metallurgical fundamentals that
govern casting; the inter-relationship between the caster, steelmaking
and rolling; grade effects on casting; the importance of maintenance;
design of the various casters; and potential future casting processes.
It is anticipated that this volume will be useful to all people
interested in casting and it will be a companion to the volume on
Steelmaking and Refining.

Flat Products Volume (Postponed)
This
volume concentrates on manufacturing of flat rolled products including
plate and sheet materials. Emphasis is on mechanical processing
to produce both hot and cold rolled products. Significant new material
has been added to update information presented in previous editions.
New chapters on modeling of both the deformation process and microstructural
evolution during rolling are included along with new information
on inspection methods, defect analysis, and special processing methods.
It is anticipated that the reader will utilize this volume as a
companion to the volume on long products.
